Rugs are not just a functional piece for your home; they are an essential element of interior design that can tie a room together, add warmth, and define spaces. At Kendall & Co we are known for our area rugs displayed throughout our shop like the true artwork that they are. Each are months in the making by vested artisans, colourists & designers. A craft that bridges cultures and a means to also do good in the world. Our hand made rugs are certified Fair Trade from socially responsible producers who support their weavers and their families through various empowerment programs.

With the exception of our outdoor rugs and vinyl mats, we feature hand-hooked, hand-tufted and the coveted hand-knotted rugs.

We know that choosing the right rug for your space can be a daunting task with so many options available. Whether you're looking to add a pop of colour, texture, or simply ground your furniture, we've got some tips to help you select the perfect rug for your space. But first...

Good to know (The fabrication process)

HAND HOOKED (1 - 3 MONTHS TO CRAFT)

Creates a relatively lower pile, casual look.

Made by tufting loops of yarn through a stiff woven base, stretched over a frame. The design is printed on the base fabric, and the loops of yarn are pushed through the fabric.

Larger looped rugs create a heavily textured rug while smaller loops allow for greater detail in pattern.

HAND KNOTTED (5 MONTHS TO YEARS TO CRAFT)

Most prestigious rug construction for its durability, minimal shedding and highest artistic quality. Only hand knotting by the most skilled can laboriously accomplish the most intricate design details and complex colour variations.

An expert weaver sits behind a loom and hand ties individual knots onto the vertical strings seen on the backside of a rug.

HAND TUFTED (3-5 MONTHS TO CRAFT)

Creates a plush and textured rug.

Made using a Tufting Gun, a hand tool that punches individual strands of fibre into a canvas stretched on a frame. The design of the rug is drawn on the canvas onto which appropriate coloured fibres fill in the pattern. When the rug design is fully piled with sheers by hand, the rug is removed from the frame and a cotton fabric is affixed to the back of the rug to hold the fibre pile in place.

Consider the Size

The size of the rug is one of the most crucial factors to consider. A rug that is too small can make a room feel disjointed, while one that is too large can overwhelm the space. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Living Room: The rug should be large enough to fit under all the key furniture pieces in the seating area. Ideally, the front legs of sofas and chairs should be on the rug, or the entire furniture set should fit comfortably on top.

  • Dining Room: For a dining room, the rug should be large enough that when chairs are pulled out from the table, they remain on the rug. This ensures a comfortable and cohesive look.

  • Bedroom: In a bedroom, you can either have a rug that sits under the bottom two-thirds of the bed or opt for runners on each side of the bed.

Style and Design

Rugs come in various styles, patterns, and designs. The style you choose should complement the existing decor of the room. Here are a few popular styles to consider:

  • Traditional: These rugs often feature intricate patterns, floral motifs, and rich colors. They work well in classic or formal settings.

  • Modern/Contemporary: Clean lines, geometric patterns, and bold colors characterize these rugs. They are perfect for adding a contemporary touch to a room. (See our Heirloom collection of contemporary and updated traditional designs are made to stand the test of time.)

  • Bohemian: Boho rugs often feature eclectic designs, vibrant colors, and a mix of patterns. They're great for adding a laid-back, cozy feel to a space.

  • Natural Fiber: Rugs made from materials like jute, sisal, or seagrass are perfect for adding texture and a relaxed vibe to a room. They work well in casual or beach-themed decor.

Color and Pattern

When it comes to colour and pattern, the rug can serve as a focal point or a subtle complement to the room. Here are some tips:

  • Bold Statements: If you want the rug to be the focal point, choose a rug with a bold colour or eye-catching pattern. This works well in rooms with neutral-coloured furniture and walls.

  • Neutral Tones: For a more subdued look, opt for rugs in neutral tones like beige, grey, or ivory. These rugs can blend seamlessly with various decor styles and colours. (See our Artisan collection of hand made wool rugs in lighter colours for customers who take a softer sensibility to furnishings or decor.)

  • Consider the Walls and Furniture: Take into account the colour of your walls and furniture when choosing a rug. You can either match the rug to the existing colours or choose a complementary shade to add depth to the room.

Texture

Texture is another important aspect to consider when selecting a rug. The texture can add dimension and coziness to a space. Here are some common rug textures:

  • Shag: Soft and plush, shag rugs are perfect for adding warmth and comfort to a room. They work well in bedrooms and cozy living spaces.

  • Flatweave: Flatweave rugs are thin and lightweight, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. They come in various patterns and are easy to clean.

  • Sisal/Jute: These natural fiber rugs have a coarse texture that adds an organic and earthy feel to a room. They are durable and great for casual spaces.

Practical Considerations

Finally, don't forget to consider the practical aspects of the rug:

  • Maintenance: Some rugs require more maintenance than others. For example, high-pile rugs may trap more dirt and require regular vacuuming, while low-pile rugs are easier to clean.

  • Durability: In high-traffic areas, choose a rug that can withstand wear and tear. Natural fibers like wool and jute are durable options. We also offer an outdoor rug collection unlike any other. Plusher, softer and doubles as indoor rugs for entryway, mudrooms, laundry room and kitchens. Made with mold and mildew resistant synthetic fibre safe on wood decks and patios. Simply clean with garden hose or power wash and hang to dry.

  • Budget: Rugs come in a wide range of prices, so consider your budget when making a selection. Remember that a quality rug can last for many years and is worth the investment.

Choosing the right rug for your space involves a combination of practicality, style, and personal preference. By considering factors like size, style, colour, texture, and maintenance, you can find the perfect rug that not only enhances your room but also reflects your unique style and personality.
