KENDALL & Co. is known for our area rugs displayed throughout our shop like the true artwork that they are. Each are months in the making by vested artisans, colourists & designers. A craft that bridges cultures and a means to also do good in the world.
Our hand made rugs are certified Fair Trade from socially responsible producers who support their weavers and their families through various empowerment programs.
With the exception of our outdoor rugs and vinyl mats, we feature hand-hooked, hand-tufted and the coveted hand-knotted rugs.
All by special order with quick 2-3 week turnaround from distribution points in North America.
HAND HOOKED
1 - 3 MONTHS TO CRAFT
Creates a relatively lower pile, casual look.
Made by tufting loops of yarn through a stiff woven base, stretched over a frame. The design is printed on the base fabric, and the loops of yarn are pushed through the fabric.
Larger looped rugs create a heavily textured rug while smaller loops allow for greater detail in pattern.
Hand tufted
3-5 MONTHS TO CRAFT
Creates a Plush and Textured Rug.
Crafted using a Tufting Gun, this technique punches individual fibres into a stretched canvas, following a pre-drawn design. Once fully piled and hand-sheered, the rug is removed from the frame, and a cotton backing is applied to secure the fibres in place.
HAND KNOTTED
5 MONTHS TO YEARS TO CRAFT
Most prestigious rug construction for its durability, minimal shedding and highest artistic quality. Only hand knotting by the most skilled can labouriously accomplish the most intricate design details and complex colour variations.
An expert weaver sits behind a loom and hand ties individual knots onto the vertical strings seen on the backside of a rug.
