FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 28th, 2014
Pay It Forward is “an expression describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others instead of to the original benefactor. The concept is old but, the phrase may have been coined by Lily Hardy Hammond in her 1916 book, In the Garden of Delight” – source: wikipedia
Pay It Forward is the umbrella banner under which KENDALL & Co Interior Design + Decor will be celebrating the annual Cabbagetown Festival.
In conjunction with the annual street festival, our Design Team will be joined by other good-hearted Volunteers to demonstrate the art of giving back – through sight, sounds and creative interactions on our 2 stages during our Pay It Forward Festival @ 227 Carlton Street on Sept 6th and 7th, 2014, from Noon to 4pm.
Stage 1: What’s Sew Good at KENDALL & Co? – 11am to 5pm
In our digital age of social networking, call it “Social Sewing”. Award-winning UK Textile Artist, Harriet Riddell, is flying in to perform in the window of our KENDALL & Co Design Showroom. Miss Riddell also has a special connection with Cabbagetown. Click here to find out more.
Harriet Riddell will take portrait sittings ($50/person) with random visitors of the Festival. She learns about her subjects through conversation during their 30-minute sessions and she will stitch magic before their eyes. She will also capture the energy of the day with a mixed bag of repurposed fabrics and colourful threads, all with her sidekick – a sewing machine!
Her brilliant free-hand stitching is something to be seen and be felt on many levels. She is also bringing copies of her new book, journaling her recent trip to India ($20).
For a sneak peek, there is a short documentary by Mint Live Video/Wall Street Journal describing Miss Riddell’s artistic voyage through India this year.
Stage 2: The Word on Carlton Street – Noon to 4pm
The late John F. Kennedy profoundly said, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation”.
In collaboration with the Children’s Book Bank, situated in Cabbagetown, local actors David Rockne Corrigan and friend, will put on 2 Free puppet shows to entertain young Festival goers. He will perform from the new book, Pay It Forward – Young Readers Edition. The original adult novel by the same author, Catherine Ryan Hyde, sparked a movement that became the international Pay It Forward Foundation.
As give-away prizes are copies of the new children’s book. There will also be a draw to win Gift Baskets, each valued at approx. $100, containing a range of wonderful books for middle schoolers. Donated by publisher Simon & Schuster Canada, with proceeds going to the Children’s Book Bank.
Stage 3: A DIY Project for your Hood – Noon to 5pm
Also in front of KENDALL & Co, we are joining forces with the Little Free Library Organization, a grassroots book exchange initiative founded in Madison, Wis. in 2009. A local ambassador, who set up the first Little Free Library in Toronto in 2011, and a fellow Little Free Library builder will be on hand to spread the word about our community action. They will also offer up free advice to empower everyone to do this themselves.
Festival goers can submit their ballots to win a “Goodmate Library” which is built by inmates undergoing rehabilitation. It is donated by the Little Free Library Organization, with proceeds going back to the social enterprise.
KENDALL & Co is setting an example as a Good Corporate Citizen with our own Little Free Library, made from repurposed materials. We want to spread the power of sharing and literary.
Let’s Pay It Forward Together – We welcome your Media Inquiries and are happy to set up Interviews, On-Air Appearances and Skype Videocalls with key players of our event.
